2023 Fall TV Preview: What To Add To Your Watchlist

Pumpkin spice, cozy sweaters, and new TV shows… fall is finally on its way! There are returning shows like Chucky, Upload, and FBOY Island, major debuts like Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a college spin-off of The Boys, a new Mike Flanagan horror series, and a Goosebumps reboot, and shows starring Brie Larson, LaKeith Stanfield, and Emma Roberts. Pop Culture Planet’s Kristen Maldonado shares a guide of shows you can’t miss this fall.

Matlock

Emmy and Oscar winner Kathy Bates heads up a new Matlock reboot about a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and decides to rejoin the workforce at a prestigious law firm. She uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption. Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, and Leah Lewis also star.

Matlock hits CBS on September 1.


St. Denis Medical

Following in the footsteps of The Office and Abbott Elementary comes the new mockumentary work place comedy St. Denis Medical. It explores an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated medical staff try their best to treat patients and keep it together.

St. Denis Medical premieres on NBC on September 1.


The Changeling

LaKeith Stanfield and Clark Backo star in The Changeling based on the book by Victor LaValle. The duo play Apollo and Emma thrust into a fairy tale of a love story… that is until Emma does something horrific and mysteriously vanishes. Now Apollo finds himself on an odyssey through a New York City he never knew existed.

The Changeling hits Apple TV+ starting September 8.


The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

The Walking Dead universe adds a new spinoff to the mix that takes viewers across the pond to France. In The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, the fan favorite character is on a mission to get home while also exploring what has been happening there — where research was being done on walkers — since the fall of civilization.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon premieres on AMC on September 10, while Fear the Walking Dead returns for its eighth and final season on October 22.


The Other Black Girl

Nella Rogers is an editorial assistant at Wagner Books and the only Black woman working at the company until the hiring of Hazel-May McCall. The two begin to grow close, but strange occurrences after her hiring lead to Nella discovering the truth about Wagner's disturbing history. The series is based on the book by Zakiya Dalila Harris and inspired by her own personal experiences and tackles racism in the corporate world. Sinclair Daniel, Ashleigh Murray, Hunter Parrish, and Bellamy Young star.

The Other Black Girl premieres on Hulu on September 13.


The Morning Show Season 3

Stakes are getting higher in the third season of The Morning Show as the future of the network is thrown into question. Loyalties are pushed to the brink and new alliances are made, while private details of their lives are weaponized. The ensemble adds Jon Hamm, Nicole Beharie, and returning fan favorite Julianna Margulies.

Season 3 premieres on Apple TV+ on September 13. 


Wilderness

A dream holiday turns into a living nightmare for a young British couple who seemingly have it all. The trailer for Wilderness caught people’s attention when Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” soundtracked the footage. Jenna Coleman, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ashley Benson, and Eric Balfour star.

Wilderness premieres on Prime Video on September 15.


American Horror Story: Delicate Season 12

American Horror Story: Delicate is adapting Danielle Valentine's book Delicate Condition in its twelfth season. The story revolves around an actress who is convinced that someone is trying prevent her from conceiving a child. Tragedy strikes when she suffers a heartbreaking miscarriage and is plagued by the haunted belief that the baby is still alive inside her. Emma Roberts, Cara Delevingne, Kim Kardashian, Matt Czuchry, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Odessa A’zion, and Zachary Quinto star.

Delicate heads to FX on September 20.


Young Love

Based on the Oscar award-winning animated short Hair Love from Matthew A. Cherry, Young Love explores a young African American family as they juggle careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and strive for a better life.

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Issa Rae led their voices to the Max animated series coming September 21.


The Continental: From the World of John Wick

The Continental: From the World of John Wick tells the origin story of Winston Scott and how he became the proprietor of the NewYork branch of The Continental chain of hotels that provide a safe haven for assassins. We see an alternate history 1970s of real-world events including the Winter of Discontent and the American Mafia’s rise to power.

The prequel series stars Colin Woodell and Mel Gibson and premieres September 22 on Peacock.


Love Is Blind Season 5

Love Is Blind puts singles in pods to see if they can find true love.

Fill up your golden goblet because the Netflix show returns for season 5 on September 22.


Krapopolis

From Rick and Morty’s Dan Harmon comes the new animated comedy Krapopolis. Set in ancient Greece, it follows a family of humans, gods, and monsters trying to run one of the world’s first cities. Hannah Waddingham, Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Pam Murphy, and Duncan Trussell star.

Krapopolis hits FOX on September 24.


The Irrational

Jesse L. Martin leads the new procedural The Irrational based on the book Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely. He plays world-renowned professor of behavioral science Alec Mercer who uses his unique expertise on an array of high-stakes cases.

The Irrational debuts on NBC on September 25.


Gen V

Young supes are tested in battle royal challenges at the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, run by Vought International, in this The Boys spin-off. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina stars Jaz Sinclair and Chance Perdomo reunite in the show, alongside Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Shelley Conn, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jason Ritter, and Clancy Brown star.

Class is in session when Gen V hits Prime Video on September 29.


Found

Gabi Mosely believes every missing person deserves to be Found... and she'll do anything to find them. She was once one of those forgotten ones and now her crisis management team is always looking for missing people. But this everyday hero is hiding a chilling secret of her own.

Found debuts on NBC on October 3 and streaming on Peacock.


Chucky Season 3

He always comes back — and this time he’s headed to D.C. Devon Sawa returns as the President of the United States, while Chucky is ready to invade the Oval Office.

Chucky season 3 premieres October 4 on Syfy and USA, with episodes streaming on Peacock.


The Spencer Sisters

The Canadian import is based on the books by K.C. Crowne. It follows Back to the Future’s Lea Thompson and Degrassi’s Stacey Farber as a mystery novelist and her detective daughter who are mistaken for sisters as they tackle puzzling cases.

The Spencer Sisters debuts on The CW on October 4.


Sullivan’s Crossing

Another Canadian import, Sullivan’s Crossing brings together Morgan Kohan and Gilmore Girls stars Chad Michael Murray and Scott Patterson. It follows a star neurosurgeon who moves back to her childhood home after a scandal. There she works to rebuilt her reputation while confronting a painful past.

Sullivan’s Crossing debuts on The CW on October 4.


Everything Now

After starring in the horror hit of the summer Talk To Me, Sophie Wilde is ready to take over fall leading Netflix’s new teen series Everything Now.

When 16-year-old Mia who returns home after a long recovery from an eating disorder, she learns her friends have moved on with teen life without her. Alongside her best mates and a new crush, Mia creates an ever-evolving bucket list to help her dive into the world of young love, wild parties… and, oh yeah, her first kiss! Lauryn Ajufo, Harry Cadby, Noah Thomas, and Stephen Fry round out the cast.

Everything Now debuts on Netflix on October 5.


The Fall Of The House Of Usher

Mike Flanagan returns with another horror series with The Fall of the House of Usher. Loosely based on the story from Edgar Allen Poe, it follows a family empire that begins to crumble when the Usher heirs begin to die off in brutal and mysterious circumstances. Many Flana-faves are set to star, including Carla Gugino, Samantha Sloyan, T’Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Michael Trucco, Henry Thomas, Kyliegh Curran, Ruth Codd, Igby Rigney, Aya Furukawa, and Annabeth Gish.

This will be Flanagan’s final series under his Netflix deal debuting October 12.


House of Villains

Move over, Mickey’s House of VillainsE! is bringing your favorite controversial reality TV stars together to crown America’s Ultimate Supervillain. The show is hosted by Joel McHale and features Jax Taylor of Vanderpump Rules, Omarosa from The Celebrity Apprentice, Tiffany “New York” Pollard from Flavor of Love, Corinne Olympios from The Bachelor, Tanisha Thomas from Bad Girls Club, Jonny Fairplay from Survivor, Shake from Love Is Blind, Johnny Bananas from The Challenge, Anfisa from 90 Day Fiancé, and Bobby Lytes from Love & Hip Hop: Miami as they battle it out for a cash of $200,000.

House of Villains airs October 12 on E!, with a supersized 75-minute episode airing simultaneously on Bravo, SyFy, and USA.


FBOY Island Season 3

The CW has saved the hilarious FBOY Island from Max’s cancellation, picking it up for a third season and by Nikki Glaser. This new season brings former Bachelorette Katie Thurston, model Hali Okeowo, and influencer Daniella Grace together to weed through Nice Guys and FBoys for a chance at love and a $100,000 prize.

FBOY Island season 3 hits The CW on October 12, plus a gender-swapped spin-off titled FGIRL Island is coming in 2024!


Goosebumps

If you loved the Goosebumps anthology from 1995, you’re gonna want to add this reboot to your watchlist. Inspired by the best-selling book series by R.L. Stine, Goosebumps follows five high schoolers in the small town of Port Lawrence as they unearth dark secrets linked to the tragic passing of a teen boy named Harold Biddle from three decades earlier. After throwing a Halloween party in the old Biddle house, these teens find themselves in a new haunted reality where they must band together to save the town, learning new things about each other and their parents along the way. With a mix of teen comedy, adventure, and psychological thrill, Goosebumps stars Justin Long, Rachael Harris, Zack Morris, Isa Briones, Miles McKenna, Ana Yi Puig, and Will Price.

Get ready to feel a familiar shiver down your spine when the new series hits Disney+ and Hulu on October 13.


Lessons In Chemistry

Based on the book by Bonnie Garmus, Lessons in Chemistry follows Elizabeth Zott who dreams of being a scientist, but is challenged by her 1950s society. Instead, she accepts a job on a TV cooking show and sets out to teach a nation of housewives way more than recipes. Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman, and Aja Naomi King star.

The limited series hits Apple TV+ on October 13.


Everyone Else Burns

The British import Everyone Else Burns follows the Lewises, a strictly religious family who believe the world will end within the decade.

The quirky coming-of-age story debuts on The CW on October 16.


Run The Burbs

This Canadian import follows the Phams, a bold Vietnamese-South Asian family who live life to the fullest. They’re the heart of their neighborhood as they challenge the way people think about family values and life in the suburbs.

Upload Season 3

It’s scary how accurate Upload has been when it comes to the future of technology. The third season will pick up with Nora (Andy Allo) and a newly downloaded Nathan (Robbie Amell) navigating their relationship, while racing to stop the mysterious conspiracy that threatens to destroy the lives of millions. Meanwhile, a backup copy of Nathan has been activated in Lakeview and Ingrid’s (Allegra Edwards) not about to let this second chance at love slip away…

Upload returns to Prime Video for season 3 on October 20.


American Horror Stories Season 3

American Horror Stories season 3 has officially morphed into a 4-episode pre-Halloween event as part of Huluween. While we don’t know much yet, we do know that Real Housewives star Lisa Rinna will appear in an episode titled “Tapeworm.”

The Hulu spin-off will return to scare your pants off just in time for Halloween on October 26.


A Murder at the End of the World

Formerly titled Retreat, A Murder at the End of the World has been my most anticipated series since I first heard about the whodunnit mystery from the brilliant team behind The OA.

It follows amateur sleuth Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) who attempts to solve a murder at a secluded retreat hosted by a reclusive billionaire. Creator Brit Marling and actors Clive Owen, Jermaine Fowler, and Raúl Esparza star.

The show comes to FX this November.


Mr and Mrs Smith

The Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie-led movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith is getting a new spin-off series led by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. Parker Posey, Michaela Coel, and Paul Dano are also set to star.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is set to hit Prime Video this November.


Invincible Season 2

Based on the groundbreaking comic book, Invincible follows teenage Mark Grayson who has the most powerful superhero on the planet as a father. Still reeling from his father’s betrayal in season one, Mark struggles to rebuild his life, face new threats, and battle his biggest far — that he might be more like his father than he thinks. Sterling K. Brown, Calista Flockhart, Phil LaMarr, Luke MacFarlane, Tatiana Maslany, Scott McNairy, Jay Pharoah, Ella Purnell, Tim Robinson, Ben Schwartz, and Lea Thompson are just a few new voices being added to the cast.

Invincible returns for its second season on Prime Video on November 3.


The Buccaneers

In the 1870s, a bunch of rich American girls explode onto the London debutante season to find a posh English husband in The Buccaneers.

Based on the book by Edith Wharton, the show hits Apple TV+ on November 8.


Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

After meeting the woman of his dreams, Scott Pilgrim finds himself contending with an army of her exes. The anime series is based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley and voiced by the cast of the 2010 film — including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Aubrey Plaza, Mae Whitman, and more — reprising their roles.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off heads to Netflix on November 17.


Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Another one of my most anticipated shows of the year is Percy Jackson and the Olympians, based on the global phenomenon of a book series by Rick Riordan. It follows 12-year-old Percy Jackson as he learns he’s a demi-god and works with his friends to restore order in Olympus when Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri star, while Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Jay Duplass make special appearances.

The series hits Disney+ on December 20.


Culprits

The eight-episode series finds a group of elite criminals, who have already gone their separate ways, being killed off one by one. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Gemma Arterton, Eddie Izzard, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste star.

Culprits is coming soon to Disney+.


The Curse

From the minds of Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder comes the new genre-bending Showtime series The Curse. It explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show. The duo star alongside Oscar winner Emma Stone.

The Santa Clauses Season 2

After failing to find a worthy successor, the second season of The Santa Clauses brings the Calvin family back to the North Pole. Scott leaves retirement to focus on training his son to take on the family business as the next Santa Claus. Eric Stonestreet joins the cast as Magnus Antas (or the Mad Santa), who reigned during the 14th century and wants to reclaim the North Pole, while Gabriel Iglesias takes on the role of Kris Kringle, the owner of a struggling Christmas-themed amusement park called Santaland.

The Santa Clauses is coming soon to Disney+.
