Book To Screen Adaptations You Can Stream Now On Max

Max, formerly known as HBO Max, is widely regarded as the streaming spot for large franchises and all things HBO. Since the platform is owned by Warner Bros, many of the studio’s large theatrical releases have been calling Max their home for years now. From Harry Potter to The Outsiders, here are the book to screen adaptations you can stream on Max now.

Harry Potter

It’s no secret that the Harry Potter film franchise is based on J.K. Rowling’s seven book series. The adaptation started in 2001 and follows the life of an orphaned wizard as he navigates friendship, family, and the world of magic. The entire eight film catalogue is available to stream on Max, including a 20 year anniversary cast reunion.


The Lord of the Rings

Based on the book series by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings follows a fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarfs, and men as they attempt to destroy the One Ring by casting it into the volcanic fires of the Crack of Doom where it was forged. The ring can cause the end of the world, so the fellowship attempts to keep it from Sauron and his Black Riders. 


Gossip Girl

Based on the New York Times bestselling book series by Cecily von Ziegesar, Gossip Girl follows a group of Manhattan’s Upper East Side rich and privileged teens. They are terrorized by an anonymous online gossip site that reveals secrets and perpetuates drama at every given chance. The series had a six season run starting in 2007 and got a two season reboot in 2021.


The Shining

The Shining, based on the horror novel by Stephen King, is a psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film follows Jack who becomes the winter caretaker of an isolated hotel in Colorado as he tries to cure his writer’s block. He is joined by his wife and son, who is plagued by psychic premonitions. Jack starts to unravel as he discovers the hotel’s dark secrets.


Spirited Away

Spirited Away, based on Miyazaki’s 2001 picture book, follows Chihiro and her parents as they stumble upon an abandoned amusement park. After her parents are turned into pigs, Chihiro meets Haku who explains to her that the park is a resort for supernatural beings who need a break from Earth. She must work at the park in order to free herself and her parents. 


The Outsiders

Based on the coming of age novel by S.E. Hinton, The Outsiders follows Ponyboy Curtis and his group of greasers as they struggle with what is right and wrong in a society where they are outsiders. The controversial book and film have become a staple in American education.
