Sundance Film Festival 2022: Am I OK? Finds Dakota Johnson Coming Out Later In Life

Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne made their directorial feature debut with Am I OK? at Sundance Film Festival 2022. The film is anchored by Dakota Johnson as Lucy and Sonoya Mizuno as Jane, two best friends who know everything about each other. When Jane gets a promotion that requires her to move back to London, Lucy finally confesses her deepest secret: She likes women and is terrified by this later-in-life realization. Their friendship is thrown into chaos as they navigate these big life changes.

Am I OK? explores the complexities of coming out in your 30s and breaking out of your comfort zone, with Johnson showcasing impressive vulnerability and depth in her role. Instead of going down the route of a typical rom-com, the film focuses on the strength of platonic female friendships. Johnson and Mizuno have relatable chemistry as opposites attract BFFs, with Lucy starting off more meek and stuck in her ways and Jane taking on the more free-spirited yet controlling role. Lucy has a caterpillar to butterfly metamorphosis over the course of the film, breaking out of her shell as she learns more about herself outside of her friendship with Jane and embraces her sexuality.

This is Dakota Johnson’s second Sundance film this year, alongside her role in the charming Cha Cha Real Smooth. Am I OK? is a funny and heart-warming film that proves it’s never too late to be your most authentic self.

Am I OK? will hit HBO Max later this year. See Pop Culture Planet’s Best of the Fest, below:
