Daphne Rubin-Vega and Stephanie Beatriz Reunite For Rockin’ New Duet In Hazbin Hotel

No me diga! In 2021, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Stephanie Beatriz played gossipy salon couple Daniela and Carla in the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical In The Heights. Now the duo have reunited in Prime Video’s new NSFW animated musical Hazbin Hotel. Beatriz plays Vaggie, the long-term partner of the princess of Hell Charlie Morningstar, while Rubin-Vega plays weapon supplier Carmilla Carmine. In episode three, we get to see them sing a soaring rock ballad titled “Whatever It Takes.” Pop Culture Planet’s Kristen Maldonado spoke with the actresses about reuniting for a new song.

“I didn’t even know it was Stephanie!” Rubin-Vega revealed to me. “I just show up, I do the damn thing, and I hope for the best because it takes so long and this project came along for me during the pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Beatriz knew exactly what she was getting into. “I did know it was Daphne at the time when I was recording. So I was really cognizant about what her voice sounds like and how to duet with her. There are these two parallel stories in that duet, but they're very different and the emotion behind the thing that they're desiring in song is also similar but different,” she shared. “Vocally, it was really fun to sing that song because I knew how we were going to be matched in the music. I found it really interesting to make choices that I think come out and really story tell through that song.”

The first four episodes of Hazbin Hotel are streaming on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping January 25 and February 1.
