Multiverses, book adaptations, and reboots… we’re talking about the most anticipated movies of 2022. As a new year begins, Pop Culture Planet is sharing recommendations of movies you need to add to your watch list.

Better Nate Than Ever (Disney+)

Based on the book by High School Musical: The Musical: The SeriesI creator Tim Federle, Better Nate Than Ever follows an unpopular Midwestern kid who dreams of becoming a big Broadway star. The comedy adventure stars newcomer Rueby Wood as Nate, Joshua Bassett as his big brother Anthony, Aria Brooks, Michelle Federer, Norbert Leo Butz, and Lisa Kudrow.

Coming Spring 2022.


Black Adam

Dwayne The Rock Johnson takes on the mantle of the anti-hero Black Adam, the archenemy of Shazam.

Coming July 29.


Bros

Billy Eichner is co-writing and starring in the new rom-com Bros about two gay men looking for love. It will feature an all-LGBTQ cast and even the heterosexual roles will be played by openly LGBTQ actors and actresses.

Coming August 12.


The Bob’s Burgers Movie

After almost a two year delay due to Covid, The Bob’s Burgers Movie will finally hit theaters in 2022. While we still don’t know much, it will be an animated musical.

Coming May 27.


Disenchanted (Disney+)

Fifteen years after their happily ever afters, the cast of Enchanted returns for Disenchanted. In this new story, Giselle ends up wishing their lives were the perfect fairytale in a way that backfires and has her rushing to save both her family and the Kingdom of Andalasia. The original cast returns, as does Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz the iconic composers to write new songs for the sequel.


Don’t Worry Darling

With Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, and Olivia Wilde, Don’t Worry Darling follows an unhappy housewife in the 1950s who discovers a disturbing truth.

Coming September 23.


Everything Everywhere All At Once

Michelle Yeoh stars in Everything Everywhere All At Once about a Chinese woman who is swept up in an insane adventure where she can save the world by exploring other universes connecting with the lives she could have led.

Coming March 25.


Hocus Pocus 2 (Disney+)

The Sanderson sisters are back, witches! In Hocus Pocus 2, three young women accidentally bring the sisters back to modern day Salem and need to figure out how to stop the witches from wreaking havoc.


Knives Out 2 (Netflix)

Knives Out 2 centers around Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc taking on a new mystery and this cast is just as star studded as the last with Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Madelyn Cline, and more.


Legally Blonde 3

While there’s not a lot out yet about Legally Blonde 3, the film is coming in the spring of 2022 written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor and following the life of a now 40 years old Elle Woods. Elle Woods has been a huge inspiration for so many young women and I can’t wait to see what her and Emmett and their kids are up to now. 


Marry Me

Jennifer Lopez makes her return to rom-coms in Marry Me alongside Owen Wilson and Maluma. She plays an international superstar who has an elaborate publicity plan to marry her singer fiancé on stage during their concert… but when paparazzi catch him cheating, everything goes out the window. On a whim, she chooses a random man from the audience — who was dragged to the concert — to marry in front of everyone.

Coming February 11.


Monster High

Nickelodeon is teaming up with Mattel for a live-action movie musical based on the Monster High franchise that tells the story of the children of famous monsters… kinda like Descendants but horror. The movie followed Clawdeen Wolf a werewolf who arrives at her new school and makes friends with Frankie Stein, Draculaura, and feels like she finally fits in…but what happens when they find out she’s half human?


Nope

Jordan Peele has a new horror movie coming out called Nope with Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, and Barbie Ferreira.

Coming July 22.


Scream 5

Twenty-five years after the original Scream, a new killer takes on the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers who are connected to the town’s past. We’ve got so many exciting young actors joining veterans Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell, and David Arquette — including Jenna Ortega, Dylan Minnette, Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding.

Coming January 14.


Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part 1)

In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part 1), we pick up one year following the events of the first film. Now Miles Morales is headed on an adventure across the multiverse with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face a powerful new villain.

Coming October 7.


Sneakerella (Disney+)

Chosen Jacobs and Lexi Underwood star in a reimagining of Cinderella centered around an aspiring sneaker designer who falls for the daughter of a basketball star and sneaker tycoon. This seems like a really creative twist on the Cinderella story with a Cinderfella as the lead.

Coming February 18.


The School For Good and Evil (Netflix)

The School For Good and Evil is an upcoming Netflix film directed by Paul Feig based on the book of the same name. It follows the adventures of best friends Sophie and Agatha, played by Sofia Wylie and Sophia Anne Caruso, who are kidnapped to the School for Good and Evil. Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Lauren Fishburne, and Michelle Yeah also star in the film.


Turning Red

With fun animation that gives off cuddly Hulk vibes, Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red centers around Rosalie Chiang, a 13-year-old who “poofs” into a giant red panda when she gets overwhelmed. Billie Eilish and her brother FINNEAS wrote music for the fictional band 4*Town in the film.

Coming March 11.


Wendell and Wild (Netflix)

From the minds behind The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and Get Out, Wendell and Wild is a new stop-motion animated film coming to Netflix. It brings comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele together as demon brothers who escape the Underworld and find themselves in a town where they must evade a teenager who is out to destroy them.
