Video game adaptations, reimaginings, and mysteries… we’re talking about the most anticipated TV shows of 2023. As a new year begins, Pop Culture Planet is sharing recommendations of both new and returning shows you need to add to your watch list.

NEW

Velma (HBO Max)

With Mindy Kaling voicing the titular character, Velma revolves are the bespectacled detective and the other members of Scooby Doo’s Mystery Inc crew before their official formation. Sam Richardson, Constance Wu, and Glenn Howerton voice supporting roles.

Coming January 12.


The Last Of Us (HBO Max)

Based on the 2013 video game, The Last of Us follows a smuggler who is tasked with escorting a teen across a post-apocalyptic America. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey star.

Coming January 15.


Lockwood & Co (Netflix)

Based on the book series by Jonathan Stroud comes Lockwood & Co about a startup ghost hunting agency operated by two teenage boys and a psychically gifted girl. Together they will unravel a mystery that will change the course of history.

Coming January 27.


Freeridge (Netflix)

This On My Block spin-off finds four teen friends working to reverse a curse after a peculiar old box seems to bring misfortune into their lives. Bryana Salaz, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ciara Riley Wilson, and Shiv Pai star.

Coming February 2.


Not Dead Yet (ABC)

Gina Rodriguez stars in Not Dead Yet based on Alexandra Potter’s 2020 book Confessions of a 40-Something F-k Up. She takes on the role of Nell Stevens, a broke, newly single disaster who wants to restart the life and career she left behind. When she lands the only job she can find – writing obituaries – she starts getting life advice from an unlikely source.

Daisy Jones & the Six (Prime Video)

Daisy Jones & The Six centers around a fictional rock band in the 1970s, following their rise through the ranks of the LA music scene to becoming one of the most legendary bands in the world. Based on the hit book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, Sebastian Chacon, Josh Whitehouse, Will Harrison, Timothy Olyphant, Tom Wright, and Nabiyah Be make up the cast.

Coming March 3.


School Spirits (Paramount+)

A teen stuck in the afterlife decides to investigate her mysterious disappearance with a group of other students who are also stuck in limbo at their high school. Peyton List, Milo Manheim, and Spencer Macpherson star.

Coming March 9.


Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies (Paramount+)

In 1954, four fed-up outcasts dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.

Coming April 6.


Agatha: Coven of Chaos (Disney+)

A spin-off of WandaVision, Agatha: Coven of Chaos puts fan favorite character Agatha Harkness at the center of her own story. Kathryn Hahn leads with Debra Jo Rupp, Emma Caulfield Ford, Joe Locke, Aubrey Plaza, and Patti LuPone rounding out the cast.

Coming in Winter of 2023.


Tiny Beautiful Things (Hulu)

Kathryn Hahn leads another new show coming out this year in Tiny Beautiful Things based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed. Told in multiple timelines, she plays a woman who reluctantly becomes Dear Sugar — an anonymous, revered advice columnist — while her own life is falling apart.

Coming April 7.


Beef (Netflix)

Ali Wong and Steven Yeun star in Beef about two people who are slowly consumed by road rage. Ashley Park and Justin H. Min also appear in the A24-produced series.

Coming in 2023.


Bupkis (Peacock)

Pete Davidson stars as himself in Bupkis, a heightened and fictionalized series about his own life. Edie Falco, Joe Pesci, Charlie Day, Ray Romano, Kenan Thompson, and Chase Sui Wonders also star.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai (HBO Max)

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai tells the prequel story of how a 10-year-old Sam Wing met Gizmo and battled a growing army of evil Gremlins in the Chinese countryside.

Goosebumps (Disney+)

In a new serialized take on the iconic Goosebumps franchise, we follow five teenagers who must work together after accidentally unleashing supernatural forces on their town and learn about their parents’ teenage secrets in the process.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (Netflix)

A prequel spin-off series to Netflix’s Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story focused on young Queen Charlotte and her rise to power.

 (HBO Max)

Move over, Kardashians — the Lorenz sisters are taking over! Inspired by the reporting of journalist Amy Chozick, More follows the Lorenz family, a tight-knit clan of flawless Latinas who are taking over the Instagram era led by their mastermind of a mother. From debt to a billion-dollar mega-conglomerate of influence, the show stars Ana Ortiz, Christian Serratos, Yvette Monreal, Georgie Flores, and Ceci Fernandez.

While there’s no date yet, I’m crossing my fingers for a 2023 release.


Retreat (FX)

From the brilliant team behind The OA — Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij — comes a new whodunnit mystery called Retreat. It follows Gen Z amateur Sleuth Darby Hart who attempts to solve a murder at a secluded retreat.


The Curse (Showtime)

Led by Nathan Fielder, Emma Stone, and Benny Safdie, The Curse follows an alleged curse disturbing the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show.

The Fall of the House of Usher (Netflix)

Based on the short story and other works by Edgar Allen Poe comes a new Netflix miniseries from the brilliant mind of Mike Flanagan. The series stars Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell, Carla Gugino, Mark Hamil, Samantha Sloyan, Willa Fitzgerald, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas, T’Nia Miller, Kate Siegel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Zach Gilford, Michael Trucco, Kyliegh Curran, Ruth Codd, Aya Furukawa, Annabeth Gish, Igby Rigney, and more.

We Were Liars (Prime Video)

Based on the We Were Liars and Family of Liars duology by E. Lockhart comes a new drama centered around a teenage girl from the wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair family who struggles to remember events from the past after a terrible accident.

Young Love (HBO Max)

Creator Matthew A. Cherry’s Hair Love won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2020 and now it’s being adapted into a new animated series called Young Love. The series fleshes out the Young family as they juggle careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multi-generational dynamics while striving to make a better life for themselves.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney+)

Based on the popular franchise by Rick Riordan comes a television adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians about 12-year-old demigod Percy Jackson who is accused by the Greek god Zeus of stealing his lightning bolt. Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri star, while Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Jay Duplass round out the cast.

RETURNING

Bel-Air Season 2 (Peacock)

Will is at a crossroads in the second season of Peacock’s hit Fresh Prince reboot following the reveal of a huge family secret.

Season 2 will also see a cameo from Grammy-nominated recording artist Saweetie, along with the addition of recurring cast members Brooklyn McLinn, Jazlyn Martin, and Riele Downs.

Coming February 23.


You Season 4 (Netflix)

You returns for two parts with season 4 as Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) poses as a literature professor at a London University. When members of London’s wealthy elite start being killed off, Joe goes on an Agatha Christie-style mystery to take down a new murderer.

Part 1 arrives February 9, while part 2 drops March 9.


Yellowjackets Season 2 (Showtime)

The critically acclaimed Yellowjackets returns for a second season and has already confirmed that a third season is coming. New characters, more mystery, and cannibalism is ahead.

Coming March 24.


And Just Like That Season 2 (HBO Max)

While we don’t know much about And Just Like That season 2 yet, it promises to bring back our favorite girls with new challenges and relationships.

Coming in 2023.


Bridgerton Season 3 (Netflix)

The third season of Bridgerton is back and finds Penelope Featherington finally over Colin Bridgerton after hearing him talk badly about. She’s finally ready to marry and allows Colin to help mentor her in gaining confidence. Perhaps his lessons work too well as now he must grapple with newfound feelings for her. Meanwhile, she has to keep her Lady Whistledown identity a secret.

Chucky Season 3 (Syfy)

While there’s been no word just yet, Chucky has been killing it — literally and figuratively — so it feels like a third season pick up is a no brainer.


Cruel Summer Season 2 (Freeform)

Cruel Summer returns as an anthology with a new story and a new cast. Led by Sadie Stanley, Lexi Underwood, and Griffin Gluck, the second season will take place in the early 2000s and feature a fractured friendship and a love triangle.

Disney Intertwined Season 2 (Disney+)

The second season of the Argentinian comedy-drama promises more adventure and mystery as Marco time travels from the ‘90s to 2021. We’ll learn more about the magical bracelet that has made all this happen… including the danger is holds.

Emily in Paris Season 4 
(Netflix)

After that huge season 3 cliffhanger, it seems a fourth season promises a lot of drama for Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) and her friends. Who will she end up with? Only time will tell.

Heartbreak High Season 2 (Netflix)

From the representation to the writing to the fashion and the way they center queer characters and characters of color, Heartbreak High solidified itself as a must-watch teen drama. Netflix delivers a high stakes and high energy series with well-rounded characters that you won’t be able to help but fall in love with. Luckily they’ve picked up the show for a second season that is bound to be as authentic, edgy, and genuinely diverse as the first season.

Crossing my fingers it’s coming in 2023.


Heartstopper Season 2 (Netflix)

There’s more queer joy coming to a screen near you as Heartstopper has been picked up for not one, but TWO, more seasons on Netflix. Based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman, it looks like the next chapter will follow the books as the characters head to Paris together.

Coming in 2023.


High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 4 (Disney+)

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is returning for a very meta fourth season! Not only will the East High students return to the school after camp to put on a stage production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, but some very famous alumni will be returning to the hallowed halls for another film. That’s right, the Wildcats will be finding out that the cast of the original High School Musical films are returning to film High School Musical 4: The Reunion at their school — and they get to be extras!

The season will feature songs from the High School Musical franchise, as well as original songs, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for some surprises.

Nancy Drew Season 4 
(The CW)

Nancy Drew will solve her final mystery this year as the show is ending after season 4. The showrunners have teased some intense yearning between Nancy and Ace now that Temperance’s curse has messed with their possible connection.

Never Have I Ever Season 4 (Netflix)

We’ll take our final trip back to Sherman Oaks as Never Have I Ever will end with season 4. It seems like Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) will have new romantic options… but what will it all mean after her season 3 cliffhanger with Ben?

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School (HBO Max)

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin returns for a second season with an updated title that teases a summer mystery for our Little Liars.

Squid Game Season 2 (Netflix)

Squid Game changed the game as it became the most watched show of all time on Netflix. While we don’t know much about season 2, it definitely promises to take things to the next level.

The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3 
(HBO Max)

The Sex Lives of College Girls has been picked up for a third season, but, after the events of season 2, there’s a chance everything could change. Will Bela transfer, will Whitney get over Kimberly’s betrayal, and will Leighton stay true to herself?

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 (Prime Video)

Get ready to head back to Cousins Beach with The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2! Belly and her boys are bound to get up to some new adventures, while Elsie Fisher and Kyra Sedgwick join the cast as new additions.

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 (Netflix)

The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy seems like it will take us in a whole new direction as Hargreeves find themselves in a new world… without their powers.

Upload Season 3 (Prime Video)

Upload season 2 ended on a wild cliffhanger that involved Nathan’s consciousness returning to the real world in a new body. There’s so many questions going into the third season, plus a new character coming in played by Roswell New Mexico’s Jeanine Mason.

Wednesday Season 2 (Netflix)

Jenna Ortega has made Wednesday one of the most successful shows on Netflix today with more than 182 million households watching the series. It’s a no brainer it would return for a second season that will give the sullen teen detective even more spotlight.

What We Do In The Shadows Season 5 (FX)

The season 4 cliffhanger found Nandor (Kayvan Novak) dash Guillermo’s (Harvey Guillen) dreams to become a vampire yet again… will he really take matter into his own hands? Season 5 is bound to be hilarious as usual.
